Shows, Parks, Babysitting, Day Camps, Birthday Parties
While the adults in your group will find a wide range of activities during a visit to Hilton Head Island, you'll discover that our community is equally child-friendly! In addition to the typical beach vacation pursuits like splashing in the waves and building elaborate sandcastles, many local resorts and museums offer organized fun and games in a supervised day-camp atmosphere that will entertain kids from toddlers to pre-teens.
Youngsters learn how to catch crabs along the shores of creeks and lagoons, using little more than a length of string and a chicken neck for bait. It's a joy to watch a small child patiently and intently drawing in a line that has a blue crab on it, hoping the creature won't swim away before he can dip a net under it! Under-size crabs must be released, giving your mini-sportsman an introduction to environmental responsibility, but perhaps you'll try a new seafood for dinner.
Many families traveling by car bring their own, but it's very easy to rent bikes and helmets, roller skates and pads, or junior-size tennis & golf gear for kids who want to try these sports. Community parks and playgrounds are great places to meet local kids and children from distant places as well. Long-term friendships are cemented between kids who return year after year to the same neighborhoods.
On cool or rainy days, kids descend on the game arcade at Adventure Cove. For the littlest ones, there is a large play area in the mall's center court. The Island Recreation Center, a county parks facility, is also a good place for indoor play, and the island's Boys and Girls Club is nearby, too.
Evening entertainment is geared for families. Under the Liberty Oak at Harbour Town you'll see singer-songwriter Gregg Russell performing for (and with) generations of Islanders and visitors. He has been an Island treasure for 30 years! Like Gregg, Shannon Tanner is an Island institution, doing his interactive stage shows at the pavilion at Shelter Cove Harbor on summer evenings.
Don't miss the Tuesday fireworks displays at Shelter Cove! As daylight fades into darkness on those sultry summer evenings, you'll hear the hiss and whistle of rockets racing skyward, then gasp at the glorious canopy of colors bursting overhead. Its the perfect way to end a kid's day on Hilton Head Island!
If the small fry are ready for an afternoon nap, or if you'd like an evening out, consider engaging a local nanny or babysitting service! They offer both individual and group rates. You can get names of these licensed and bonded companies from your rental company, hotel, or resort.
