Hilton Head has a few equestrian centers for vacationers interested in spending time on horseback. Sea Pines Resort has the Lawton Stables, where residents and guests over 8 years old can take riding lessons or guided tours through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. For the little ones or those that don't want to ride they also have pony rides, a petting zoo and you can see a Clydesdale up close and also pulls the carriage rides. Sandy Creek Stables on Jonesville Road in Hilton Head does not offer tourist attractions, but does board horses for owners.
Moss Creek only a short ride back over the bridge, has another equestrian center that offers basic riding lesson to show jumping and dressage. But for competitors, Rose Hill Plantation on the mainland in Bluffton is the best bet. Rose Hill teaches riding lessons, hosts horse shows and tournaments - even Polo tournaments!
For something else out of the ordinary you can watch a Marsh Tacky Horse race in February as part of the monthlong Gullah Heritage Celebration. The Marsh Tacky is a small stocky workhorse that is linked to when the Spanish were on the island and in the lowcountry (it is now the state horse of SC). This horse is good for working in the swamps, lowlands and water with out fear. For the past two years races have been held on the Coligny Beach with lots of spectators lined up and down the beach course to watch the multiple heats. It is great fun!
