Hilton Head Island's outdoor adventures include a wide variety of fun excursions. Dolphin tours over the Calibogue Sound, nature cruises, horseback guided tours, water sports, and a legion of historic sites throughout Hilton Head encourage families and individuals alike to come and enjoy the Island beyond the beaches. Visit the Harbour Town Lighthouse, Hilton Head Island's most recognizable landmark; or visit nearby Daufuskie Island's two range lighthouses, built in 1883 to direct ships on their starboard sides. This area's beautiful environment is the reason people have chosen to build their lives here for hundreds of years and much proof and many remnants of those lives are visible today.

History buffs can visit the Shell Ring sites dating from the Archaic Period's Woodland Indians, for example. Hilton Head Island was re-discovered and named much later by Captain William Hilton of England in 1663 and soon after, the first European settlers established dwellings. While neighbor Daufuskie Island sided with the Tories, this island embraced independence for the Colonies during the American Revolution, but most of our historic sites date from the Civil War. Gullah culture, practiced by Island natives of African descent, is shared with tourists daily through Heritage Tours.

Historic mentions of today include Arnold Palmer's victory at Sea Pines Resort's Heritage Classic in 1969, which ended his long winless streak. Whether modern or past, Hilton Head Island is home to South Carolina's aggressive history and personality, and residents are more than happy to share and discuss them. Through a nature tour introducing vacationers to our flourishing wildlife, a boat tour amidst dolphins, or guided tours around the Island's historic remnants, visitors are invited to explore the outdoors of this memorable town.
Water sports are a huge attraction for the thousands of tourists to Hilton Head each year. Activities such as kayaking, sailing, skiing, knee boarding, wake boarding, and (the big one) Jet Ski rentals are all extremely popular among residents and visitors alike for good reasons: we have unlimited access to the Atlantic and nearby rivers and weather is so pleasant around here.
