Aside from Hilton Head's spectacular golfing reputation, there are a number of incredible tennis facilities on the island, too. Dennis Van der Meer has two island facilities, one located off Forest Beach Drive and the other inside Shipyard Plantation. The 20-court Van der Meer Racquet Club was renovated almost 20 years ago, when the pro took Billie Jean King's place at Shipyard's facility.
Sea Pines Resort also has 2 racquet clubs, the Sea Pines Racquet Club and the South Beach Racquet Club. One directed by Stan Smith, the same pro who is one-half of the partnership behind the Smith-Stearns Academy of Sea Pines Resort, with Billy Stearns. Long Cove Club's tennis facility has 10 Har-Tru courts and is home to eight USTA separate tennis teams throughout the year. Clint Van Aswegen directs the 10-court Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort on Folly Field Road. Palmetto Dunes also has a tennis center, with 23 courts; it has been frequently featured in the nation's top 50 by Tennis Magazine.
Wexford Plantation has a racquet club, Hilton Head Plantation has two (one at the community's public country club and one at Spring Lake), Port Royal Plantation has one, and Windmill Harbour has courts next door to its Yacht Club. Nearby Daufuskie Island has two tennis centers.
Dozens of other tennis courts are scattered in and around Hilton Head's plantation communities. Tennis facilities include Fiddler's Cove Racquet Club (located on Folly Field Road), the Cordillo Public Tennis Center, Island Club Tennis, and many more.
