Hilton Head Island, SC, is world-famous for its local golf facilities. For a week every spring, Sea Pines Resort's Harbour Town Golf Links celebrates Heritage Week. Heritage Week is when the PGA Heritage Tournament is played on Hilton Head, where it has been held for over 40 years. In addition to this tournament, many others are scheduled year-round at some of Hilton Head's more than 20 courses.
Hilton Head National Golf Club
Hilton Head National was founded in 1989, and has since built an unmatched reputation for great course conditions and customer service. With the belief that a golf course should be challenging yet playable, Hilton Head National promises to make it an enjoyable experience for any level of golfer.
Surrounded by nothing but the South Carolina Lowcountry and tree-lined fairways, you'll see why this is a "must play" while in the Hilton Head area. With eighteen holes designed by Gary Player and nine holes designed by Bobby Weed, this twenty-seven-hole facility will accommodate both amateurs and professionals alike.

Many of the local courses are named for their designers. Each of the plantations - otherwise known as gated communities - on Hilton Head has at least one golf course, with the single exception of Windmill Harbour. Hilton Head Plantation has four 18-hole golf courses as does Sea Pines Resort: the Ocean Course, Heron Point by Pete Dye, a members only course and, of course, Harbour Town Golf Links. Palmetto Dunes also has three: the George Fazio, the Robert Trent Jones, and the Arthur Hills. Another Arthur Hills course was built at Palmetto Hall Plantation Club.
Pete Dye has had a hand in the development or renovation of five Hilton Head / Bluffton area courses (one in Colleton River Plantation, one in Long Cove Club, one in Port Royal Plantation and the newly renovated Heron Point) along with Harbour Town Golf Links, where he collaborated with Jack Nicklaus. In addition, Nicklaus himself has worked on at least two others: the 1992 course at Colleton River Plantation and Indigo Run's 1993 Golden Bear course.
While many of Hilton Head's championship courses allow public play, some others are still limited to private memberships. And among those that allow the public, a few are inside gated communities and so access remains restricted to a degree.
