Pump Boys and Dinettes

Tuesday, June 17, 2014 - Saturday, July 26, 2014
8:00PM

Pump Boys & Dinettes is a tribute to life by the roadside - part musical, part comedy and 100% amazing! On Highway 57 somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, there's a gas station next to a roadside eatery called the Double Cupp Diner. The four guys at the station have been known to do a few auto repairs, but only when aided by great tunes and maybe a beer while they're at it. Prudie and Rhetta Cupp celebrate their pie with the same zeal they bring to their kinship with the boys. Fun for all! Songs like "Caution: Men Cooking," "Be Good or Be Gone," and L.M.'s lament, "The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine," will make it a toe-tappin' good time for the whole family!

East of Suez

Monday, July 7, 2014 - Saturday, August 2, 2014
8:00AM

The Society of Bluffton Artists presents "East of Suez," a collection of very special paintings by Betty Hintz, on display from July 7 through August 2, at the SOBA Gallery. One of the seven founding members of SOBA, Hintz has been contributing to the local art scene for over 20 years. As she puts it she "fiddled around with art my whole life but never really in a serious way until I moved to Bluffton in 1986 and took the first of many pastel classes with wonderful artist and teacher, Joyce Nagle." Hintz says "then I finally knuckled down and painted." The work of "East of Suez" is dedicated to Southeast Asia, mostly scenes from Bali. The paintings, mainly in acrylic, are meant to evoke everyday life but have a dream-like quality that captivate the viewer. Hintz traveled with her husband who worked in Goodyear's Crude Rubber Division his whole career, which took them out of the United States for over 33 years. They moved to Sumatra in western Indonesia in 1951 with "two babies and high hopes" and she ended up being completely enchanted. She travels back there whenever possible, as do her four children, in fact planning a trip to Bali as she finishes preparing for this show! A reception to meet the artist will be held on July 13 from 3 - 5 pm at the gallery on the corner of Church and Calhoun streets in Old Town Bluffton. July Full Moon Party

Saturday, July 12, 2014
8:00PM - 2:00AM

The sensational Athens Rock Band The Wood Grains will be making a summer tour stop at the July Full Moon Party at The Sunset Landing Beer Garden, Hilton Heads newest concert venue...beneath the live oaks and spanish moss, on the banks of Skull Creek....just doesn't get any better. Sip great drink specials from Dark Corner Moonshine! "Though it clearly owes to 1960s and '70s rock and pop, The Woodgrains' self-titled new sophomore record, which the band describes as "a lot riffier" than its predecessor, is an impressively original outing. The Woodgrains finds the longhaired Athens-via-Waycross trio tightening up the psychedelic, Southern-tinged, Zep-heavy rock and roll sound it introduced on last year's From Marshall, to Venita." - Gabe Vodicka (Flagpole Magazine) The Woodgrains are a three-piece band that thrives on distinct three-part harmonies and sounds reminiscent of the goldener days: psychedelic, Southern-tinged, Zep-heavy rock and roll -- a nostalgia-tinged brand of lysergic folk-rock -- a band that sounds like a band, not a songwriter, not a recording project. After relocating from the murky depths of the Okefenokee Swamp, the trio has constantly been working towards establishing The Woodgrains as a prominent musical figure in the Classic City (Athens, GA) and across all borders beyond.
