May - The Month for Arts and Culture in Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry were discovered and embraced by artists in all media for its pristine beauty and cultural heritage. Today we celebrate a thriving arts community with "Bravo", an annual event running the entire month of May. Here is just a sampling of what is offered to pique your artistic interests.

Hilton Head enjoys a healthy and vibrant theatrical community, and the productions in May are no exception.

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina will present "Hairspray" April 27-May 29th, 2011. Winner of eight Tonys, including Best Musical, Hairspray is a modern classic and a worldwide hit (the London production was nominated for a record-setting seven Laurence Olivier Awards). South Carolina Repertory Company presents "Cheer from Chawton: A Jane Austin Theatrical" May 3rd - 8th, 2011. With delightful speech, period movement, costume and music, this show reveals the wit, humor, affection, character and depth of Jane Austin, who wrote some of the greatest novels ever produced. 2PM and 8PM performances. Main Street Youth Theatre will present their annual Shakespeare in the Park event at Shelter Cove Community Park and will feature Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Performances run May 20th – 22nd and May 27th – 29th. Gates open at 6:00PM for picnics on the lawn. Bring your own dinner or purchase it on site. The show begins at 7:00PM. The May River Theatre Company in Bluffton opens its tenth season with the great musical "CHICAGO" May 13th - 28th, 2011. With performances at 8:00PM on May 13,14, 20, 21, 27 and 28. For musical performance, at the beginning of the month there will be the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra final concert of the season. The Planets: A Celestial Journey. Three symphonic classics from three centuries: The Bach Double, Verdi's great operatic march; and Holst's famous seven-movement score, which evokes the astrological characteristic of each planet. Then finishing out Bravo will be a "A Star-Spangled Celebration" presented by the Hilton Head Choral Society. The final concert of the season, this popular Memorial Day music fest features all-American repertoire from colonial folk songs to 19th century hymns to patriotic anthems—and a special musical tribute to our Armed Forces. Included in the art exhibits around town, The Art League of Hilton Head will present its 22nd National Juried Show at the Walter Greer Gallery in the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Artists from across the country compete to exhibit in seven categories for over $7,000 in cash awards. Admission is Free and all the art is for sale. Lovers of art and the outdoors will enjoy the 3rd annual Hilton Head Art Festival presented by Howard Allen Events at Shelter Cove. Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday May 28, 10:00AM – 6:00PM and Sunday May 29, 10:00AM – 5:00PM. Over 100 of the country's most talented artists will display over 15 million dollars of original and handmade artwork with mediums including jewelry, sculpture, pottery, photography, paintings and much more.
