STEVE RILEY INTERVIEW
( Question )
What are some of the challenges faced by the town of Hilton Head
in the near future?
( Answer )
One of the
greatest challenges is going to be dealing with the impacts of mainland
growth and development as it affects traffic, the ability for workers
to get here, the ability for visitors to get here and get around, and
as it impacts the wages needed to attract and retain workers.
Other major challenges include extending sewer into Ward One, preparing
for a rapid response and recovery from a hurricane and trying to keep
the "product" fresh and interesting and inviting. By "product" I mean
the beaches, the accommodations, the quality of the environment, the
attractions and activity options, real estate values and a variety of
ownership options, and the like. Places can fall out of favor; either
as a place to live or as a tourism destination if they are not constantly
maintained and refreshed. But not everyone recognizes that.
( Question ) In your opinion, what separates Hilton Head from the
other vacation destination in the state?
( Answer )
As to what separates us, the Chamber of Commerce might have a better
answer than I can give. To me it's the quality of the beaches, the quality
and variety of the golf and tennis facilities, the range and quality
of the accommodation options, the eco-tourism opportunities, the lack
of clutter (no garish signs or buildings; lots of landscaping), and
a family-friendly environment
( Question ) What do you see for the future of Hilton Head Island?
( Answer )
I see us as the central city of a growing regional area. The place that
has the best in restaurants and entertainment and the most prestigious
address. The place with the amenities. The place everyplace else in
the region aspires to
